Oxford City Council starts Local Plan consultation process

Consultations are underway in Oxford to create a new Local Plan to help guide development in the area for the next two decades…

Work has begun on a Local Plan for Oxford. The city council has started consultations that will shape the development of the region over the next 20 years.

Oxford currently houses 160,000 people and is expected to see a population increase of 20 per cent over the next 20 years. The Local Plan will need to take into account this growth, examining solutions to provide enough housing, transport and jobs in the region, as well as other public amenities.

The Local Plan will aim to deliver new jobs and homes for the growing population of Oxford, while responding to future social, environmental, and economic changes.

‘Oxford Local Plan 2036’ will see the first period of public consultation run until the 5 August. The city council hopes communities will come forward and identify key issues that need addressing as well as offering potential solutions to deal with them. It is also expected other consultations will take place in the summer of 2017 and 2018, with the aim of producing a draft Local Plan by 2018.

Board Member for Planning, Transport and Regulatory Services Councillor Alex Hollingsworth said: “Our key priority is to get the balance right between our population, the economy and the environment as we develop the vision of what Oxford should be like in 2036.

“We want to make sure that Oxford continues to be a successful and attractive city where people enjoy living, working and visiting.”
